Part-time Staff Benefits

August 2007 issue

I am writing in regards to part-time staff benefits, particularly holiday pay. I am currently working part-time for a 24/7 department. I have been told in the past that part-timers do not receive any extra compensation working holidays by HR. Although I have not brought much issue to this, I believe it should be re-examined by HR. Part-timers, with proper incentive, would be more than happy to provide relief to those full-time staff members who would like to enjoy the holidays. I'm not suggesting that part-timers receive the same holiday pay structure as the full-timers nor for all the holidays DePaul recognizes. What I am suggesting is that part-timers receive time and one half pay on federally recognized holidays. Is that too much to ask? I believe that this would provide an extra benefit not only to the part-timers but also to the effective operational needs of the university.

Response: We are in the process of revising and updating the staff compensation policies and will be making decisions regarding which policies to extend to part-time employees. Your concern, as well as many other issues, will be addressed in this initiative.
