PPO Coverage for Therapy

August 2008 issue

I have had a death in my family and sought psychiatric and psychological counseling this year. I was shocked to discover that our health plan (BCBS) ha a yearly maximum of 20 sessions (combination of psychological and psychiatric services). This is Astonishing to me. Though the insurance will cover complete and total institutionalization, it will not cover additional sessions which I sorely need. Where is the parity? Does this fit the Vincentian mission at all? I have to now pay out of pocket ($185 anhour) which is really quite a burden for me. Many employers have a maximum of at leat 35 sessions a year. 20 seems incredibly low to me.

Response: Our medical plan is consistent with best practice in the market place. The plan also allows for an additional 35 sessions if the condition is severe. You may also obtain short term sessions under our EAP (Employee Assistance Plan).
