Locking Bikes in the Loop

September 2008 issue

Can you please address the issue of bike parking at the loop campus? As far as I know, there isn't a dedicated space for bike parking at this campus and the parking in front of the DePaul Center is sometimes full. It'd be a great if there was a bike room or somewhere safer to park bikes and would certainly encourage people to bike to work or class, as well as bike between campuses. If this cannot be accomodated now, is bike parking included in future space planning at the loop? Thank you!

Response: We have had discussions concerning secured parking for bicycles as part of the current master plan process. The only good way to do this is by way of building exterior "bike corrals", which require allocations of space that we presently do not have available for this use. They also require funds for the likes of fencing, gates with card reader hardware, security cameras, paving in some cases and miscellaneous lock down hardware for inside the corral...which we do not have the funds to support. This has been discussed as part of master planning as well- the financial support of elements like this. So it has been discussed, and we can see it turning into reality...but over time.
