College Degree Requirements and Hiring 1

April 2007 issue

Please explain this to me. I've seen clerk positions posted that required a college degree. I have seen assistant directors positions that say degree preferred. I am a office assistant 2 and have no degree but I see positions for office assistant 2 that say degree required. In my department someone with a BFA was given a directors position over someone else who has been in that department for years simply because they have a BFA. College degrees are great, but they don't automatically mean you can do the job, experience should count for something.

Response: Currently managers draft position descriptions and determine educational and experience requirements based on minimum requirements to perform the duties of the job. Managers are best suited for these tasks because of their understanding of the needs within their functional areas. Currently, the staff compensation structure and all staff positions have been undergoing a review to ensure appropriate salaries and accurate position descriptions. As part of this process, policies related to position descriptions and compensation will also be updated. This project also will provide clearer guidelines for managers in developing the education and experience requirements for their positions.
